They’re here–the dog days of summer. School has been out for a few weeks, all of the awesome Pinterest ideas have been taken out of the arsenal and enjoyed for 17 minutes each, Memorial Day and July 4th are over and Labor Day seems light years away. We are now hearing the sounds of mamas everywhere hitting the wall. Fear not, at least for the weekend, we’ve got you covered!
PHS Pop-Up Garden @ 4 pm to Midnight
This week’s pick for the Philly Beer Garden Series is a new garden which opened just last week next to Jamaican Jerk Hut at 1438 South Street. The garden holds about 300 patrons and features hammocks, palm trees and cabanas. The beer is flowing and tropical cocktails are the menu too. The daily food truck is Phoebe’s BBQ and Little Baby’s will be serving up their delicious ice cream. As an added bonus the Smak Parlour Fashion Truck will be rolling into South Philly with heaps of ladies summer wear. Be spontaneous!
Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and family to an outdoor screening of Despicable Me 2 at Lovett Park. Grab dinner from this weeks lineup of food trucks before the show starts. Be outdoorsy!
Blueberry Festival and Pie Eating Contest @ 8 am to 5 pm
This summer favorite comes with a jammed packed line up of fun. Makin’ Music will be on the orchard grounds to start and end the day in a sing-song way. There will be hula hoop, bean bad toss and pie eating contests and visits from costumed characters all day long. Don’t miss story time and grab a delicious blueberry pie to bring home for dessert. Be sweet!
Blobfest @ 11 am to 6 pm
This free street fair will feature live music, a Fire Extinguisher Parade, costume contest, hot rod car show, trivia contests and more in celebration of the classic sci-fi movie, The Blob. Screenings of The Blob will run all day for an admission fee. Be nostalgic!
Want to relieve the French Revolution? You can at Bastille Day. Join in celebrating the day of Marie Antoinette’s famous cry “Let them eat cake” with singing, dancing and a mock beheading at the an annual family festival. You’ll get to meet Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Benjamin Franklin and see a life-size French Baguette. Joining the famous historical figures are confetti cannons, stilt walkers, a cardboard horse. The event ends with 2,000 Tastykakes being thrown from the towers at the crowd below. The Bearded Ladies Cabaret will be there to lead the charge. Be whimsical!
Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming America Exhibit @ 10:30 am to 5:00 pm
Visit the National Museum of American Jewish History to learn the stories of Jewish athletes and other minorities and their experience in becoming American. They not only changed the game of baseball, but the game of life as they blended thier culture with others. Be historical!
Media Car Show @ 10 am to 3 pm
The 7th Annual Downtown Media Car Show will be a must see this weekend. Registration is $15 and happens the day of the event so enter your baby in the fun or take a Sunday stroll to check out the whips. The Delco Cruisers will be in attendance with their bikes, hot rods and muscle cars. Be classic!
